The Moment Stress Shows Up Is Often the Moment Before a Breakthrough
When routines fall apart and emotions rise, something important is usually trying to redirect you — not derail you.
When Stress Is a Message, Not a Problem
There are moments when your brain feels scattered.
You feel stressed.
Out of control.
Overwhelmed by everything you need to get done.
You sit there thinking about all the things on your list, and instead of helping, it makes the stress worse.
But here’s something important.
These moments are often where your biggest breakthroughs live.
When you feel like you’re in the fight, that’s the moment to stop and ask better questions.
Why do I feel like this?
Is there a message trying to get through?
Is there something I’m missing?
Do I need to do something differently?
A Small Story With a Big Lesson
The other day, I went to the gym first thing in the morning, like I usually do.
My wife came with me this time. She’s not quite as enthusiastic about getting out of bed when it’s dark and cold, so we left later than normal.
My brain didn’t like that.
My routine was off, and I could feel myself getting irritated. I was meeting a friend to train, and normally I’d do a few kilometres on the treadmill to warm up before he arrived.
This time, he was already there.
I didn’t get the chance.
He actually said it was fine if I wanted to jump on the treadmill, and he could tell I needed it more for my head than my body. We trained anyway, had a good session — but I felt exhausted.
That’s when it clicked.
Getting there late had actually worked in my favour.
If I’d done my usual 20 minutes on the treadmill, I would’ve been completely drained. The universe, in its own way, had protected me from overdoing it — even though my mind initially resisted the change.
Choosing a Different Interpretation
When you start living with the mindset that things happen for you — not to you — everything shifts.
You begin to trust that whatever the outcome is, it’s better than the alternative you didn’t see.
That mindset allows you to feel gratitude instead of frustration.
It allows you to see that there’s often something bigger going on than what’s right in front of you.
You might see a world-class athlete suddenly get injured and miss a major event. On the surface, it looks devastating.
But sometimes, that injury is the universe stepping in to prevent something far worse — a serious accident, or permanent damage.
When you hold this perspective, you begin to understand something powerful:
Whatever happened may have actually saved you.
Things can almost always be worse — regardless of what you’re facing.
Emotional Reactions Create Patterns
Here’s another key insight.
When you have a big emotional reaction to something — anger, frustration, despair — you’re sending a signal.
Emotional reactions are like requests to the universe.
The universe doesn’t hear, “I don’t want this.”
It hears, “This has energy.”
And it responds with more of the same.
When you react strongly, the universe thinks, Ah — this matters to them. Let’s do that again.
That’s why self-awareness is so important.
Notice how you react.
Notice what shows up again and again.
Notice the patterns.
When you stop feeding situations with emotional charge and remain calm, those situations often stop appearing altogether.
Whatever you react to emotionally will continue to show up.

African Adventure
If this way of thinking resonates with you, I’m taking it far beyond the page. I’m heading to Africa on an adventure that’s about stepping into the unknown, testing your edges, and experiencing life without the usual noise and routines. It’s wild, grounding, and deeply human.
The kind of journey that shifts how you see yourself and the world. If you feel even a flicker of curiosity or excitement reading this, that might be your cue to explore what’s possible. You can find out more about the adventure here:

“When you start living with the mindset that things happen for you — not to you — everything shifts. You begin to trust that whatever the outcome is, it’s better than the alternative you didn’t see.…

there’s something magical about the way you worded this.
So much of the stress we feel comes from believing life is out to get us. But when you start seeing challenges as experiences that teach or shape you, the whole tone changes.
Your words makes me think that you don’t have to love the hard moments, but by searching for the lesson in each difficulty can make life feel lighter and more meaningful. 🖤
Beautiful post and so true.
I specifically loved the line... The universe doesn’t hear, “I don’t want this.”
It hears, “This has energy.”
So powerful!
