Here is an ancient tale about a young boy and his dog. Well, it was actually a tame wolf, rather than a dog as we know them as today. The boy and his wolf would go hunting every day.
They worked well together as a team. They would hunt rabbits and deer. The wolf would chase a young buck towards the boy who was waiting with his slingshot.
He was extremely accurate and it would hurl a stone with incredible speed right between the eyes of a fleeing buck. With the animal stunned and lying senseless on the ground.
The young boy would finish it off, giving thanks to the universe for the gift. He would cut out the entrails and give it to his wolf companion who without, he would not be able to hunt effectively.
They shared a special bond and always had each other's backs, no matter what. One afternoon, the boy was carrying a small buck on his back and a rabbit attached with some string to his waist.
Suddenly, the wolf stopped and gave a low growl as his hackles stood up. The young boy looked at his wolf and asked what the matter was. He looked around but couldn't see anything.
The next minute, there was a thunderous crash as a crazed and vicious bear came tearing out the forest towards them. It was extremely angry and aggressive as it bore down on them.
Frozen for a moment, the wolf bit the boy on the leg to get him to move. The boy was about to launch into a run but he knew there was no way they were going to outrun a bear running downhill.
It was literally hurtling towards them. The boy dropped his buck and waited for the bear to get closer. The wolf never left his side, wondering what on earth was going on.
He felt sure they were both going to die a horrible and painful death. But at the last minute, just before the bear was about to reach him, the boy launched himself to the right and rolled away.
The wolf sprinted after him. The bear was moving so fast that it could not change direction, let alone stop. It roared as it shot past them, trying to skid to a halt but it was too late.
The bear tumbled head over heels and careened down the steep mountain side. Desperately trying to dig its claws into the soil and rocks to stop itself.
It had tremendous strength and managed to slow it's charge.
Meanwhile, the boy and his wolf, picked up their kill and headed up the mountain once more. They knew that the bear could easily outrun them but they had a slight advantage running uphill.
The boy ran as fast as his legs would carry him, trying to put in as much distance as possible between him and the bear.
The wolf easily kept pace with him, looking back over his shoulder to see what the bear was doing.
It had regained its feet and was lumbering after them, panting and drooling. The was something wrong with it, like it was sick.
The boy and his wolf kept running, zig zagging to gain distance more quickly. Finally, they reached a rocky outcrop. There was a large drop over the edge.
They edged around the side of the rock jutting out into space. It was dangerous trying to hide under the rock on the edge of a huge cliff but the bear would not be able to reach them here.
They sat their panting for breath, trying to be quiet but their hearts where racing and they were gasping for air.
They could hear the bear very close to them, panting and roaring. So close they could smell its evil breathe.
As the boy and his wolf sat there, clinging onto the cliff face, terrified, they started to notice something about the bear. It sounded like he was in pain.
The boy peered around the edge and saw the bear, just sitting there staring at him. Grumbling and moaning. The boy thought for a moment.
The bear wanted their help, not to eat them. His wolf wasn't having any of it. He tried to stop the boy but he put his hand on his head, calming him.
The wolf growled reluctantly as he watched his dear friend going towards a certain death. But the bear did not react. He sat there, grumbling, swishing his head from side to side.
The boy walked up to the stinking bear. He had to hold his nose. He put all his focus on love and empathy for the bear which seemed to calm him down.
The bear opened his mouth and roared loudly and the boy noticed one of his teeth was rotten and black. The boy put his hand out to try and calm the huge bear.
He took the string from his waist and walked closer, showing it to the bear. He put the string in his own mouth, indicating he would wrap it around his tooth and pull.
In these ancient times, there was a much deeper understanding between man and beast. There was communication which doesn't exist at the same level as it once did.
The bear quietened and opened his mouth, allowing the boy to wrap his piece of string around the rotten tooth.
He then touch the bear on the top of his head and nodded. He held onto the string with both hands and all his might as the bear threw back his head with a loud grunt.
The tooth flew out and arced through the air, landing near the wolf who jumped back in surprise. Having yanked a bears tooth out, he felt certain they were both about to get torn to shreds.
But the bear, after once last roar of pain was quiet now. The wolf and the boy could see that the bear was actually quite skinny and must have been starving as it hadn't been able to eat for ages with his rotten tooth.
The boy proffered the rabbit to the bear who took it in his giant paw. He lowered his big brutish head and the boy touched him once again. It was an understanding and a thank you.
Then the bear whirled around and lumbered off as the wolf and the young boy stood watching him. The boy picked up the tooth. He would clean it up and make himself a fine necklace.
The wolf looked at the boy in awe. Amazed that one so young could have so much understanding and bravery to help a dangerous beast that would eat both of them in a heartbeat.
But this is how it was in ancient times. That close connection between man and nature.
A gift that still exists today but it nowhere near as powerful as it once was because man is too busy racing around to see what is right in front of him.
I would like to highlight the profile of one of my biggest supporters to show my appreciation.
