A little boy and his dog are walking through the forest one morning. This was many thousands of years ago at the dawn of new civilisations that where starting to spring up.
Humans where getting together and understood that they were stronger as a bigger group than living as a small clan.
As the boy walked through the forest, he felt that he was being followed. His dog, who was more wolf than actual dog, was on edge. His hackles on the back of his neck where up and he let out a low growl.
The boy started walking a bit faster. Then as quick as lightening, they both dove under a large bush and leopard crawled to the other side.
They lay still for a moment, trying not to pant to loudly from the effort. As they watched, the heard the patter of feet run past.
It was a small band of warriors. What they wanted with a small boy and his dog, he couldn't fathom. They knew they would have to pay the patience game.
The warriors would keep searching for them and then they too would stop and wait. They would just sit and watch and wait for the pair to think it was safe to come out and then they would pounce on them.
There was no telling how long they would have to wait or how long the warriors would be willing to sit and watch.
But the sun would probably move some distance across the sky before they would feel safe. Just then, they heard the warriors return.
Their feet slapping on the well-worn path used by people and animals alike. They stopped close to where the boy and his dog had darted off the path and into the undergrowth.
They were tracking them. Looking for the signs. Some warriors where like magicians.
They could tell where an animal or person had gone, how much they weighed, where the sun was in the sky, if they had an injury and so on. Just from a single foot print.
They heard them whispering amongst themselves. Then they heard spears being thrust into the bush repeatedly. They didn't shout or make any other noise which was a little disconcerting.
While the boy looked behind him at the sounds, his dog was looking ahead. He knew hunting tactics and how they would flush out prey when hunting, straight into the jaws of the main pack.
Neither of them moved a muscle. They barely breathed but where ready to spring up and dart off if they needed to.
They were unlikely to win a fight against a trained group of warriors so their best tactic was to run and outsmart them. As they lay there, they noticed movement up ahead.
Sure enough, a few other warriors had moved ahead of the undergrowth, expecting the two to be flushed out. Their escape had been cut off.
The boy put his hand on his dog's back. They may have to fight their way out after all. The warriors ahead were moving in and the warriors behind them still thrusting their spears into the bushes.
The little boy was more worried about his dog's life than his own and he knew his dog felt the same way. The warriors got closer still. The pair could hear their own heartbeats thudding.
Thinking that the noise of their hearts would give away their position. Then the boy remembered something that had been taught to him by his father.
"When you're outnumbered by an enemy and the odds are against you, you have one secret weapon at your disposal. Your most powerful muscle is your heart and your love.
Send love to your enemies. Send them forgiveness and unconditional love. You have the power to project love to others.
And they will feel that love which will dissipate their hate and anger. It will make them feel calm and rational. It will take the fight out of them."
Remembering this, as he lay there in fear and terror, he put all his focus into projecting love to those that hunted him.
He sent understanding that they were simply following orders. He sent understanding that they were not doing what they wanted but where also consumed with fear themselves.
He projected love from his little but powerful heart while he shut his eyes tightly. He felt the warmth from his heart, he felt its rapid beating slow. He felt his dog become calm under his touch as he also felt it.
He lay there, completely focused, imagining his heart sending out waves of love and compassion.
His own fear dissolved and he spoke directly to the hearts of the warriors that hunted him. I love you. I see you. I appreciate you. He repeated this in his head to the hunters.
Suddenly, the thrusting stopped behind them. He heard the warriors shouting to each other which was the first time he had heard them speak.
They spoke a language he did not understand. They were not local warriors. Perhaps they were hunting for slaves.
The little boy and his dog heard them regroup and start to walk away. Then he heard the slapping of their feet as they started to run. The sound got fainter as they got further away.
The two companions let out a sigh of relief. They would still wait for it could still have been a trap and one warrior may have stayed behind. Watching and waiting for them to move.
They cuddled up together and fell asleep, exhausted from their ordeal and narrow escape.
From that day on, he knew he had a secret weapon deep within him. He knew that if he could master his heart and love, he would have a great life ahead of him.
